Google accounts annoyance

This is annoying. I’m trying to sort out some of my Google groups, which are all registered to my Yahoo email address. But I also have a Gmail account which I want to combine with my Yahoo Google account. Google will let me add alternative email addresses to my Yahoo Google account, but it won’t let me add my Gmail account. It tells me here that I have to delete my existing yahoo related Google account, then open up my Gmail related Google account, then associate my yahoo address to that. But all my groups and history are connected to my Yahoo Google account! I don’t want to have to re-join all of them again. 🙁

  1. Hi Beth,

Google accounts and groups are very very weird. I have spent hours trying to solve a similar problem to yours for a member of a group I manage – its hard to get a mental model of how they think the system SHOULD work. It looks as though accounts which are started with a google mail address have a different status to accounts which are started with another email provider – as you can’t add a gmail address as an alternate, nor can you CHANGE your primary email TO gmail from another – but you can change from say yahoo to hotmail. Very weird – as I can’t find any difference in what each account allows you to do.

  2. Hi Diane,

I was wondering if you could help… I opened a blog and then opened a gmail account a while back that I didn’t mean to relate to the same google account. Since I’ve handed the blog over to someone else, I deleted my gmail account yesterday but it’s still showing up as the primary email for that blog. When the gmail is canceled, will it still do this or will the primary email transfer to something else (maybe the secondary email). Basically is there a way to change the primary email? Can the person who took over the blog create another gmail after mine is deleted to take the new primary email spot?

Thanks for any help you can give 🙂
