Organised or unpopular? Virb.com

26 November 2007

On Virb.com today, this made me laugh:

Friend request - Virb

I like their tone. I hope I’m organised. This was on the page where you accept friend requests. I was there because I was declining a friend request from a band I didn’t like. Maybe the above message should only come up if you’ve gone to that page without having any friend requests in the first place, not as the thing you’re faced with immediately after refusing a friend request. Maybe something about me being picky would be better in that situation.

I am my fan

Facebook have brought out ‘Pages’ for organisations, bands, artists and celebrities. I’m sure I set myself up as an ‘artist’ but I seem to have come out as a celebrity. Fine by me. If you like my illustrations, add yourself as a fan.

With a ‘Page’ you get a nice chart showing page views. Once I’ve got 10 fans I’ll also be able to get demographic data. Well done to Facebook for realising that if they provided this when you only have one fan, you’d end up being told where that person lived, so they wait until you’ve got ten.

It’s quite an obvious way for Facebook to make money. If I had something to sell (apart from about three t-shirts I have left over from last time I designed some) I’d totally be buying Facebook advertising. You get to choose how much you want to spend and what user groups you want to advertise to. Fabulous. People will whinge about their data that they put into Facebook being used to target them by advertisers, but to be honest, I don’t mind. I think it’s great that if I’m going to see adverts, they’ll be ones about things I’m likely to be interested in. Yeah advertising can get annoying and it’s all a big corporate mouthpiece and the people have no voice on the streets apart from illegal graffiti etc. etc.. But I don’t get why people are more upset about targeted advertising than advertising in general.

So don’t start calling me a capitalist. According to Facebook’s political compass application, out of 20 friends who’ve added it, I’m almost the most left-wing, and almost the most authoritarian. So I’m close to Nelson Mandela, and my friends are all in a cluster close to the Dalai Lama. Pretty Interesting…

Songza rocks

14 November 2007

Songza.com is the best site I’ve seen in the last couple of months. A music search engine / jukebox which also provides a player for your site, but WordPress seems to strip the HTML code so I can’t figure out how to put it in here :(

Shame it’s not integrated with last.fm too. Wasted listening… it pains me.

Good points are though:

  • users can rate songs as being good or bad so better recordings appear higher in search results.
  • you can send your friends a link to a favourite song with an email form
  • you can make your own playlist (but I don’t think you can save it to listen to later…)
  • you can view the discography of the artist you’re listening to
  • you can buy the song you’re listening to

Never mind MySpace DJ-ing at parties – I reckon this would be an awesome way to provide music at a party and let your guests choose the songs.

Twitter users spamming me?

8 November 2007

In the last 24 hours I’ve had 17 new people follow me on Twitter, without even twitting anything new. All the usernames of these people are of politicians, with a number after, e.g. denniskucinich4. They’re obviously being run by the same person but I don’t understand the point of them following me. Maybe it’s just to get me to look at their twitter account and hopefully subscribe to it, then whoever is managing the account can persuade that politician’s promoters to sponsor them. Anyway, it’s weird, and I hope I don’t get too many more from them.
