So I know that Google searches are now personalised, based on your previous search history. But the recommendations it makes in the predictive text as you type a search, are also fed by what the world is searching for. This was used in a campaign about the racism against Romanians, as Google predicts ‘stupid’ as the word most commonly search for after ‘Romanians are’.

In this vein, I wondered what other interesting things could come up. Here’s some examples, which I realise might be influenced by who Google thinks I am…

1. I/we think about time, work, money and the meaning of life.

2. I/we wonder about the science of the sky, and are generally pretty tired

3. Apparently I/we care about finding Chuck Norris. I really, really, don’t.

4. I’ve never searched for any of these things either. So that must be the world’s fault. So people care about some TV show, work (again), basic maths and being fat. That’s depressing.

5. The only one I might be responsible for here is ‘what is my ip’. So everyone else is trying to find a car and a hifi, and needs a watch.

I’m stopping now because the results are just annoying me. Searching ‘who’ suggested ‘who is in I’m a celebrity 2011′ as the top result. Really, world? Really?! Is there any hope for humanity?

I love Google Insights because I love data and data analysis. I’ve used this tool for a long time for keyword research, audience research, for timing campaigns for clients and lots of other stuff. I thought I’d use it tonight to see what body part people are most interested in (you know the crude saying, “tits or ass?”) and it came up some really interesting stuff which I’ll share here. I’ll probably get a tonne of weird porno people coming to my site now but what the hell, this is interesting stuff to me so here goes. Data is based on Worldwide searches in Google from November 2005 to November 2010.

Leaderboard of body parts / key

I put a bunch of body parts that people looking for porn on the internet are likely to put into Google Search. It only lets you compare five. “porn” itself was way way off the scale, and “vagina” was just below “dick” in terms of popular searches. So, we see that we have “ass” as the number one body part, followed by “tits”. “penis” and “boobs” are tied and “dick” comes last. Interesting.

Has it always been this way? Well, no.

Here we see that over the last couple of years, “ass” has grown in popularity, particularly in the past year, having been much closer to “tits” in 2005-2008. In contrast, “tits” has fallen and if it continues to do so, will be overtaken by “boobs”. “penis” and “dick” have remained relatively stable.

Do worldwide tastes differ? Let’s take a look. Here’s a heatmap of how interests in “ass” have spread across the world in the past five years:

Yes, the country most interested in “ass” is a small African country called Eritrea. Other countries at the top of the interest chart for each word are: “tits” in Canada, “penis” in Papua New Guinea, “boobs” in Pakistan and “dick” in New Zealand.

In related search terms, the top related search for all words was “big whatever” e.g. “big tits”, except “penis” where “big penis” was outdone by “the penis”. Weird.

You can see and play around with all this data yourself on Google Insights for Search here.

Next I should do the same thing for kinky sex acts and see what’s most popular and where. This is fun!

Also if you like this kind of research, you’ll like OKCupid’s blog – OK Trends. It’s great.

I love looking at site analytics, and one of the most interesting and useful things to look at are search terms people use to find your site. So you can really look at what topics people are interested in. I had a look at how people come to my site via Google, grabbed the top 20 phrases and put them into Wordle. I didn’t weight the most commonly used ones against the 20th most commonly used one, but this still gives a good representation of the key themes people search for, that I write about.

So I finally did it. I moved my blog from WordPress.com to Bethgranter.com (which was embarrasingly out of date due to being hard coded) using the WordPress.org CMS. Picked a new theme. Set the front page to a single Page rather than latest Posts (good or bad idea? Comments please). Imported all my content and your comments. BUT…

My old blog at WordPress.com has a bunch of incoming links from various places from over the years, providing lots of lovely Google Juice. Obviously the new site doesn’t (yet). I can’t do any automatic redirecting from WordPress.com because it’s hosted there and they don’t allow it (for free… there may be a paid option, not sure). So I’ve just put a big fat ‘This blog has moved to bethgranter.com’ message in the navigation and on the homepage.

However, when people go direct to a specific article, which they normally do, via Google searches or inbound links, they still get the content they wanted, so have no reason to go through to my new site. If I were to delete all my old posts, people coming via referring links to posts would be faced with a ‘page not found’ message (albeit provided in a friendly WordPress tone of voice) with the ‘this blog has moved to bethgranter.com’ message in the header and sidebar. And Google would recognise the bethgranter.com content as the priority. Although without those inbound links those good (moved) posts would have no Google Juice, so I’d get less traffic. Today so far my blog at WordPress.com had 68 visitors. This one at Bethgranter.com had 17, of which 5 were from the old blog. I guess that’s not bad considering I only put the blog on Bethgranter.com 48 hours ago. So yeah, the question is:

Should I delete my old juiced up blog posts from WordPress.com now they are on Bethgranter.com?!
